Celebrating 50 years of success

On Wednesday October 25th we were delighted to welcome over 200 guests to a luncheon that celebrated 50 years since Fiske was founded.

Clients, current and former staff, and friends of the business were entertained in the elegant and historic surroundings of The Draper’s Livery Hall on Throgmorton Street, London.

Our founder and Chairman, Clive Harrison, entertained those present with a speech that included anecdotes from his long career in the City, which started in 1961.

He recalled, how in 1975, two years after the company’s foundation, Fiske acquired Bragg, Stockdale & Hall, which had started 156 years previously. As a result, Clive said, Fiske could claim its foundation date as 1819!

Clive also told listeners about the occasion when a plane in which he was travelling nearly crashed because it got volcanic dust in its engines, how he had to dodge fallen trees when going into the office the day after the great hurricane of 1987 and how Fiske avoided the worst of the dot.com crash at least partly because he had a natural aversion to tech stocks.

The speech ended with Clive wishing his successors at Fiske “following winds and fair seas”. Read the full text of Clive’s speech here.

James Harrison, the current Chief Executive of the company, recalled that over many years Clive had journeyed around the world to personally assess investment opportunities, but that some of the best outcomes for the investors had begun as chance encounters with other business leaders on the flights between the meetings.

James continued by listing the four key tenets he believes have guaranteed the longevity of the business and will position it for continued success:

  • Looking after its clients
  • Looking after its staff
  • Keeping an open mind in terms of investment
  • Ensuring that the balance sheet remains rock solid.

Finally, James echoed Clive’s nautical-themed conclusion with one of his own, saying:

“We look forward to the future from a ship well found, with taut rigging, a weather eye and plenty of grog aboard as we navigate the ever-heaving seas of investment markets.”
